Hello, I am a second-year gardener, and I am excited for this year’s garden adventures and hopefully a plentiful harvest. Last year was a great start for me. Overall, I had a lot of success growing. I was especially blessed with a great amount of tomatoes, which I canned. So, about once a week, I open a can of late summer that I put into use for my sauces, stews, and pizzas.

Learning from last year, I decided to cut back on the brassicas. I will use the freed-up space for more onions, celeriac (aka celery root, aka the underrated crop Number 1, aka the ugly but sexy root), and parsnip. Last year, I did not have luck growing lettuce from seed. Therefore, I am super happy the BIU program provided us with some lettuce seedlings.

I am also experimenting this year with intercrop-planting. I added the fast-growing salad and spinach seedlings between the cabbage and collards. I am excited to plant crops that I did not plant last year: I just got myself some material for two new raised beds (2×8) that I will be building over the weekend. One bed will house the potatoes; I will use the other for planting watermelons, winter squash, and maybe some cucumbers (Dragon Egg — Croatian Heirloom). Well, super excited about all this! Wish us luck and a green thumb. Also, I am already feeling a bit blue, graduating from the program. Thanks to all involved at BUI, with a special shout-out to Ashley and Bethany for the resources, guidance, and support!
