This year we added an extra 75 square feet to our garden so I wouldn’t be stress about crowding and everything would have plenty of room. Well as usual, I still underestimated because I think the Sungold tomato plants have a mind of their own. THEY ARE HUGE. You can’t plant anything beside them thinking tomatoes grow tall and I could fit something next to them. BIG NOPE. They grow out and up, and if all of the blossoms actually turn into tomatoes, I’m going to be able to sell them wholesale to grocery stores!
And speaking of tight space, I need a way to better space out carrot seeds. They all germinated and grew and now I’m having to thin them. I feel like I’m committing murder and snuffing out the life of a perfectly good, potentially nice carrot. But my son loves to pick them and he’s a great helper.
The heat this summer is no joke so the hose is getting lots of action, morning and night sometimes. But almost everything is doing so well that I guess I’m doing it right. I was late getting somethings in (corn, I lost my seeds) so we’ll just have it for Thanksgiving. I covered my collards, broccoli and cabbage this year so worms haven’t been a problem (YES) and hopefully I can keep the vine borers out of my squash.
Anything not growing? Two years in a row now my spinach is a dud and I don’t know why. It’s in a raised bed with lettuce, onions, radishes and jalapeños. Radishes also are a dud this year. Everything around them, beautiful. No issues. Oh well.
Over all everything’s going good and I’m sure we’ll have more than we need again. The Elizabethton Library has a community Produce Pantry that you can take extra home-grown vegetables to, so we might be taking advantage of that. They’re free to anyone needing anything.
Thank you again for this wonderful program and opportunity!
