Organic gardening became our priority this year after an autoimmune diagnosis that left us searching for more natural ways to manage it. After switching to a strict organic vegetarian diet plus fresh juices we quickly realized how costly meals would be. Thankfully, someone shared the Build it Up program with me and I filled out the application right away.
We had a couple of raised beds last year, but had no idea what we were doing so there was no real harvest and I just assumed I wasn’t a good gardener. It turns out I just didn’t have the right tools and education I needed to have a successful garden. I never knew there were two types of tomatoes, determinate and indeterminate. In the past I was growing indeterminate tomatoes with a stake in the ground and getting frustrated that they kept growing taller.
This year we have 16 raised beds and 4 towers. The things that are currently growing amazes me and the harvest that we’ve already pulled is such a blessing. The kids are learning how to tend to plants while also making healthier choices in their diet. They’ve even started drinking a fresh carrot and green juice. This program was a Godsend to our family. We couldn’t have done it without Build It Up!
