As a first-time gardener, the Build It Up program has been such a valuable learning experience. Before joining, I felt unsure about where to begin, but through the workshops and resources, I’ve gained a better understanding of how to plan, plant, and care for a garden. Learning about soil health, companion planting, and seasonal timing has helped me feel more confident in making choices that will lead to a healthier, more productive garden.
One of the most important things I’ve learned is that gardening is a process of patience and observation. Seeds don’t sprout overnight, and plants require consistent care. Paying attention to sunlight, watering needs, and pest control has taught me to be more mindful and intentional. I’ve also realized that mistakes are part of the journey, and each challenge—whether it’s weeds, bugs, or weather—comes with an opportunity to learn.
Another lesson I’ve taken from the program is the value of community. Hearing from other gardeners, both new and experienced, has shown me that gardening is not something you have to do alone. Sharing tips, seeds, and encouragement makes the work more enjoyable and rewarding. I’ve learned that gardening can connect people, not just to their food, but to each other.
Overall, Build It Up has given me both knowledge and confidence to grow food for myself and my community. I’ve learned that gardening is not only about producing vegetables but also about growing resilience, creativity, and joy. This first year has planted a seed of curiosity in me, and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow with each season ahead.
