As a first-year gardener selected for the Build It Up program, I am excited to embark on a journey that will not only transform our yard into a flourishing garden but also serve as a resource for my extended family and broader community. In these uncertain times, I believe the ability to grow our own food is a powerful tool for resilience—both for ourselves and those around us. With the support of the Build It Up program, we are stepping into the world of gardening with a sense of confidence and purpose, knowing that this venture is more than just about planting vegetables; it’s about sowing the seeds for a more self-sufficient, connected, and resilient future.

One of the most special moments I’ve experienced so far in this process happened when I was planting our first row of strawberries with my cousin. We stood together, preparing the soil, and he shared a beautiful memory that brought our family’s history full circle. “I remember when mamaw Robin used to grow strawberries on her farm,” he said. I had not remembered this, as most of my memories on mamaw Robin’s farm were centered around the rambunctious goats, adorable bunnies, baby chicks, ducks, and semi-feral kittens. My cousin and I spent so much time there before mamaw passed away, forming memories that made us who we are today on her small East Tennessee farm. His reminder made those first plantings all the more meaningful. Not only were we growing something together, but we were also honoring the legacy of someone who had shared with us some much love, joy, and freedom.

Our garden is a family affair, and though we’re all gardening novices, the excitement we share is palpable. My cousin, his girlfriend, my husband, and I have embraced this challenge wholeheartedly, even though we have very little experience in the garden. We’re a team of beginners, learning as we go, but with each seed we plant, we grow a little bit more confident. Our big dreams shine through as we work to cultivate a slightly overwhelming 25×15-foot garden, which includes everything from tomatoes and cucumbers to cantaloupe, popcorn, arugula, spinach, kale, carrots, edamame, and a variety of companion flowers like echinacea and marigolds. The diversity of crops reflects our commitment not only to growing food but also to supporting local ecosystems with plants that benefit one another.

This garden wouldn’t be possible without the help of our local partners, like Fauna Forest Farm in Jonesborough, TN, who have provided us with literal tons of free mulch. Their support has made a significant difference in preparing our garden beds and ensuring that the soil is rich and healthy. With their help, we’ve learned valuable lessons about composting and soil health, which are foundational to the success of any garden. It’s inspiring and reassuring to build connections like this within a larger community that values sustainable practices and mutual support.

The Build It Up program has been essential in our gardening journey. As total beginners, we were unsure of where to start, what to plant, and how to tackle the challenges that come with growing food. But the guidance and resources provided by the Build It Up leaders have given us the confidence we needed to keep going. From hands-on workshops to the invaluable advice we’ve received, we are feeling supported every step of the way. The program has not only empowered us to take on this project but has also created a sense of accountability that motivates us to persevere, even as we encounter obstacles.

I want to take a moment to encourage anyone who’s recently heard about the Build It Up program and is wondering if they could take on such a project. If you’re hesitant or unsure, I completely understand. Gardening is a big task, especially if you’ve never done it before. But the truth is, this program is designed for people like us — novices, dreamers, and doers who want to make a difference in their own lives and communities. With the support of the Build It Up team, local partners, and your own family and friends, you could find the support and confidence to give it a go.

As I look at the baby plants beginning to grow in our garden, I see more than just vegetables; I see a future where we can support one another through sustainable practices and food security, where communities come together to face uncertain times with resilience. And I’m so grateful to be on this journey, knowing that the Build It Up program is here to help us every step of the way. If we can do it, so can you!”
