Welcome to the Appalachian RC&D’s first edition of the local food and agriculture newsletter.

So much exciting work is going on with local food and agriculture in our region! Our goal is to help organize these exciting developments and provide you with a quarterly selection of stories, news, events, and resources to help everyone from producers, community members, businesses, and consumers stay in touch with what’s going on in our region.

In this edition you will find… upcoming resources for the waning summer and beginning of fall through NRCS and UT Extension programs; USDA funding and opportunities; information about the farm bill; upcoming workshops and events for producers. Additionally, we offer some insights into local community work and programs that bring local food and agriculture into our neighborhoods. We offer an extensive portrait of Appalachian Sustainable Development, a regional non-profit that has been committed to promoting local food in the region for 19 years.

Be sure you view three new short films made in house about the importance of local food, directed and produced by Eleanor Goodrich, our summer AmeriCorps associate.

Finally, don’t miss the latest in local food economy news—including the Boone St. Market in Jonesborough (opening October); Rooted in Appalachia partnerships with local restaurants, and a new CSA model out of Johnson City.

We hope you find something you need from this issue and we look forward to sharing your stories in our up coming newsletters–if you have a story, email us and become a contributor!
