Appalachia CARES

The Clinch Powell RC&D hosts our region’s Appalachia CARES Program.  Currently there are 35-40 members serving at sites throughout east TN, including several members in Washington and Greene County. Members are involved in service projects in education and the arts (The Gray Fossil Site, the Hands-On Museum, the Reece Museum, Rural Resources, the Appalachian Quilt Trail), transitional housing construction, mentoring through Boys and Girls Club, and counseling homeowners to help them keep their homes through financial hard times.

Appalachia CARES is a school and community-based service-learning program that promotes COMMUNITY, ACTION, RESPONSIBILITY, EDUCATION, and SERVICE as program cornerstones.  The overall goal of the program is to impact rural youth and community volunteers through service learning, to encourage volunteers to become civically engaged, inspired, and motivated to use their own skills, knowledge, and education to make a positive contribution to their communities regardless of their talents or deficits.
