One of the longest running rural food hubs in the country; AH continues to set its sights on recruiting farmers, providing training and technical support and identifying strong markets. **Since 2001, local farmers have earned more than $9 million dollars in income.Appalachian Harvest (AH): ASD’s rural food hub

 Fun Food Hub Facts:

  • The average food hub in the US serves about 55 farmers. In 2015, AH worked with 66!
  • 3% of US food hubs work with strictly organic farmers
  • Appalachian Harvest works with both organic and conventional farmers. (We have found that it is hard to be exclusively organic in an area where many farmers are not interested in the challenges associated with becoming certified organic)
  • Appalachian Harvest secures retail orders from grocers like Whole Foods and Ingles Markets
  • Appalachian Harvest provides aggregation and distribution support
  • Appalachian Harvest offers training in food safety and handling and organic certification
