From it’s HUMBLE beginnings to its BOUNTIFUL state, our family garden has been a source of joy, learning, and blessing for us all.
Our family has always had something growing in a pot or two wherever we’ve lived…an we’ve lived in many states. When we relocated here in 2019, we tried our usual planting and growing tactics in some pots…but nothing really thrived. We heard about ARCD’s Sustainable Agriculture program from some new friends here and we feel so blessed to be part of the program!!
Our family has so enjoyed learning about creating organic raised beds in our new East Tennessee home. From how to build them, to filling them with layers of organic matter and compost, to covering and protecting beds, to planting the seeds, watering and protecting growing plants, and harvesting the amazing bounty that they’ve produced. Our raised beds have created a lot of great memories for our family!
Our family has especially enjoyed eating fresh spinach, zucchini, broccoli, cucumbers, snap peas, onions, strawberries, and sweet potatoes. We have been harvesting and drying basil, rosemary, oregano, mint, chamomile, thyme, sage, cilantro, parsley, and dill. We have also been enjoying homemade pickles, pesto, and zucchini bread. We are anxiously awaiting melons, ripe tomatoes, sweet potatoes, blue potatoes, and turnips.
