DID YOU KNOW…..
SNAP recipients can double their local food dollars at area farmers markets? Please help spread the word! Dollar for dollar, up to $25, SNAP purchases are matched with ‘bonus bucks’ good for produce purchases.
The Jonesborough Farmers market has been doubling SNAP purchases since 2011, but this year match funding from the Wholesome Wave Foundation allows the match to be greater than ever, and market managers say so far 53 people have taken advantage of the bonus….for a total of nearly $1000 in rewards!. Amounts charged on a SNAP card can be used for any food item for home consumption, and bonus dollars can be used for any fresh fruit or vegetable. Now that corn, tomatoes, berries, peaches and more are in the market in abundance, it’s time to take advantage of this great offer!
The Jonesborough Farmers Market explains how to use SNAP at their market: present your card at the info booth of the Jonesborough Farmers Market. Charge it for the amount you want, and you will receive tokens good for double that amount to spend at the market.
It’s not just the Jonesborough Farmers Market where SNAP recipients can double their dollars, most of the markets in Northeast TN and Southwest VA are participating, thanks to the efforts of Appalachian Sustainable Development with grant funding from Wholesome Wave.
If you can’t make it to the Farmers Market, the Boone Street Market is now able to accept SNAP and is also participating in the double dollars program! The market is located at 100 Boone St in Jonesborough and is open Monday through Saturday 10am-6pm.
